Lakes International Comics Art Festival Report

Here's my little report on the bits of the Lakes International Comics Art Festival that I saw...

It was my first time at the Lakes festival so I wasn't sure what it would be like. To save money I was commuting up each day, which was knackering, so I missed out on all the evening drinking. Next time I think I would try and stay on the Saturday night. I had a table in the Comics Clock Tower in the Town Hall.

The Saturday started very quiet, I sold a few in the afternoon but I became very worried. I haven't done a show for a while, and this is the only big one I'm doing this year so I was a bit panic-y. Luckily the Sunday was much better and I did well in the end. So that was a massive relief. The room was pretty busy all the time, but never impossible to move around which was good. I met a lot of great people and caught up with everyone I knew, it was easy to find people. I didn't buy many comics due to poverty but traded Lydia Wysocki's 'Pancho and Lefty' which looks cool.

The show was very well organised and run. All the exhibitors got free coffee, tea, biscuits and fruit which was really nice. It made a lot of difference and made the show feel a lot more friendly and inclusive, and not like we were second class to the guests, which sometimes bothers me. We also got really nice chocolate tarts in honour of the 24 hour drawing marathon.

I didn't manage to go to any of the talks as I was behind my table all the time, or go to the How Viz is Drawn exhibition which I had wanted to see, but I did make it to the two Oliver East exhibitions.

The first one was at the Brewery Arts building just down the road. It was pages from his 'Homesick Truant's Cumbrian Yarn' comics. The pages looked really good on the walls. Some had a really different looking sort of spray paint style for the greys.

Also we went to his exhibition of huge paintings in The Factory just over the river. They were really great, and impressive. His drawing has changed a lot, especially the people, and they worked very well in black and white, and on the massive scale. They looked a lot of fun to have done. There was a lot of very interesting lines and textures.

I enjoyed the show in the end and would go back next year, if I can get a table. Hopefully it'll get a little busier for sales as it was a lot of fun.

Lakes International Comic Art Festival

I'll be at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival this weekend on Saturday and Sunday. I'll be in the Comics Clock Tower at table 69.  Why not come along and see me if you're there. I'll have copies of my new comic trilogy 'Slaves of the Megapode' (probably Rob's best comic yet - Rob Clough) and 'RhiZome volumes 1 and 2'. Also I'll have plenty of copies of 'The Storytellers', 'A Handful of Groats', 'The Gods Must be Bastards' and my earlier comics too. Let's hope it goes well, this is my only big comics show of the year. I'm looking forward to it, as I haven't been to any shows for ages.

Rob Clough Reviews 'Slaves of the Megapode II and III'

Rob Clough updated his post before on his High Low blog now he has read 'Slaves of the Megapode II and III'. He added-

UPDATE 8/11: I just got the second and third issues of Slaves of the Megapode, and what's interesting about it is just how closely it actually wound up hewing to police procedural shows. The comic isn't so much about the supernatural as it is about narcotics, government corruption, conspiracy and murder. At the same time, this comic kept getting funnier despite staying firmly within its own world and rules. This may be my favorite Jackson comic ever.

Thanks Rob!

John Robbins - Unlucky Unlikely

I hadn't read a new comic for a few months so I was very pleased to get John Robbins new book. It's a proper 76 page book published by Phil Barrett's Black Shapes Books. You can buy it here.

It's a collection of the Tom Bennett stories from 'Curtains', 'The Well Below' and 'Inside Outsiders' so I'd read some of it before, but there's new chapters too and it is all repositioned and makes more of a single storyline. Putting all the stories together in a book makes it more dark and disturbing, but also funnier, with running jokes. I really liked it. It's probably John's best work and would be a great introduction to his comics if you'd never read any before.

Forty-something Tom Bennett meets a woman he used to fancy at school, a child has gone missing in Dublin and there's a death in the family. Tom tries to deal with his mother and make women see him as a sexual being. His habit of speaking lines from films and poems at exactly the wrong moment will get him into trouble.

Little Holiday in Bilbao

I just got back last night from a little holiday in Bilbao. Have I missed anything interesting? It was a very nice little holiday, I didn't think about comics at all. Here's a picture of the Guggenheim. Sadly there was a Yoko Ono show on, and a big show of Braque didn't start till we left. The permanent exhibitions were very good though. Back to work tomorrow at Hoghton Tower Farmers Market. Hopefully it'll stay sunny and warm and I'll sell some ice cream.

Reject Story

Here's a story I drew to try for the Kus Villages anthology, but it got rejected. Then I sent it to Off-Life but didn't hear anything from them. I was trying a different sort of drawing, but it doesn't have much of an ending. I like the third page though.
